Who'll be picking up one of these?

Film fans will not need reminding that next weekend knees all over Tinseltown start quivering at the prospect of the Academy Awards. To get you in shape for the big night, theartsdesk is running a week's worth of Oscar-related features starting on Monday.

On Monday Nick Hasted considers the film career of Daniel Day-Lewis, the star of Lincoln considered a dead cert to win his third Best Actor statuette having already snaffled the BAFTA last weekend. On Tuesday, Demetrios Matheou considers the political films in the light of Argo’s spectacular marriage of Hollywood and grim events in revolutionary Iran. On Wednesday our team of film writers consider the 10 key Oscar-nominated films of Steven Spielberg.

Then we turn to predicting. On Thursday, Karen Krizanovich runs through the nominations for screenplays and supporting actors and actresses. Matt considers the best picture, animation and foreign film categories on Friday, and Emma Simmonds sifts through the nominations for best actor, actress and director. Sunday is a day of rest. Then on the following Monday we bring you our annual report on the whole glittering night from Matt Wolf, who has been staying up to watch the Oscars for quite close to all eternity.

That schedule in brief:

  • Monday: Daniel Day-Lewis
  • Tuesday: Political films
  • Wednesday: Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated films
  • Thursday: Predictions for screenplays and supporting roles
  • Friday: Best picture, animation and foreign film
  • Saturday: Best actor, actress and director
  • Sunday: Put your feet up and watch the event itself.
  • Monday: Oscars report.
